On March 30th 1979 the foundation for the Mosque for first mosque in New Zealand was laid. Further extensions was completed in 1986, which created a praying area for ladies, accommodation for the Imam, kitchen facilities, Janaza washing room and additional prayer hall for Jumma prayers. Ponsonby Mosque was re-named to Al-Masjid Al-Jamie to give the mosque a Islamic name in the late 20th century. Today the Al-Masjid Al-Jamie has a total capacity of 700 people with a capacity of 20 car parks and additional parking in the church on the opposite side of the street for Friday Jummah prayers.

The current Imam is Sheikh Haroon Khaukha. Al- Masjid Al-Jamie is host to the Tabligh Jamaat and is the Markas for New Zealand and visiting foreign Muslims for Da’wah. Al-Masjid Al-Jamie is the hub for NZMA activities and meetings. The main source of income is voluntary contributions and fund rasing drives that are held on a regular basis (for example selling lunch meals after Jummah prayers). Under the current leadership of Haider Lone, several renovation projects has started, including a complete painting of the mosque, new garden layout and the ablution area is next with planned new tiling with a better design for users.
