The New Zealand Muslim Association (NZMA) is equipped to provide all necessary services associated with Muslim burial. We have been providing funeral service for 40 years. NZMA is a registered funeral director. It has one major cemetery in Manukau Memorial Gardens at present. Alhamdulillah, we have been able to provide services for about 45-50 funerals per year.
NZMA has all the necessary facilities and resources to perform washing (ghusl) and shrouding (Kaffan) of the dead body. To cater for the needs for Muslim burials, NZMA is in constant communication with Auckland Council. Future plots are our major topics for Waikumate and Northshore (Schnapper Rock). NZMA funeral services has two ghusl facilities in Ponsonby masjid and a newly built masjid in Ranui. It also has a dedicated team of volunteers to assist with the funeral arrangements.

NZMA is a charity organization and is managed entirely by volunteers. Our volunteers maintain the highest standards in providing high quality, professional quality care in accordance with teaching the Ahlus Sunnah Wal jama’ah and are advised by our board of scholars. NZMA provides its service free of costs, however, costs incurred for burial services are recovered from deceased’s family.  The cost of Islamic burial service is between $7,500 to $8,000 depending on the day and time of burial. Auckland Council additional charges apply for burials after 3pm and weekends.

NZMA recognises death is very traumatising for the bereaved family and its volunteers try its utmost to support the bereaved families.  Our volunteers maintain the highest standards in providing a high quality, professional quality care.

The services offered by the NZMA include but are not limited to:

  • Removing the deceased’s body from the place of death and transporting to our local facility.
  • Arrange burial booking with the cemetery for the soonest appointment available.
  • Washing (Ghusl) and shrouding (Kaffan) of the body.
  • Perform the Janaza Prayer.
  • Transporting the deceased person from Janaza prayer to the cemetery.
  • All preparations are done under strict Islamic guidelines.
  • Registration of death certificate to Internal Affairs.
  • Grave on going maintenance

Muslim Baby Burial Plots – NZMA Cemetery Section

Alhamdulillah, with careful consideration for the needs of our Muslim community, NZMA has established dedicated baby burial plots within the Muslim cemetery section over the years

Unlike the general baby burial section managed by Auckland Council (Manukau Memorial Gardens), which is shared by people of all ethnicities and faiths,

all NZMA cemetery plots are designated as adult Muslim burial plots.

For the benefit of our community and to meet Islamic (Shariah) requirements, NZMA worked with Auckland Council to allow one adult burial plot to be divided into four baby burial plots. This enables Muslim babies to be buried within the dedicated Muslim cemetery section alongside their families, rather than in the general baby burial section.

The suitability of each baby plot depends on the size of the baby:

* Babies requiring a burial length of up to 800 mm can be accommodated in the dedicated baby burial plots.
* If the required burial length is more than 800 mm, the baby will need to be buried in a standard adult grave, and the applicable Auckland Council charges for an adult plot will apply.

Fees

NZMA does not charge any fees for its funeral services, including coordination and funeral arrangements for baby burials.

However, Auckland Council charges will apply and may include:

* Burial plot fee
* Grave digging and backfilling
* Weekend or public holiday surcharge (where applicable)
* Any other applicable council fees

Please note that the council fees for the general baby burial section are different from those applicable to the NZMA Muslim baby burial plots within the adult Muslim cemetery section. Therefore, the applicable council charges may vary.

This initiative has been established solely for the benefit of our community, ensuring that our babies can be buried within the dedicated Muslim cemetery section alongside their loved ones, in accordance with Islamic values.

Auckland Cemeteries

NZMA has designated spaces at below address:

1. Manukau Memorial Gardens at 361 Puhinui Rd, Papatoetoe

The following is the procedure to be followed when a death occurs:

  • Deceased family to obtain a death certificate from the doctor in attendance or the Hospital.
  • Authorised person of the bereaved family to complete the NZMA Service declaration form.
  • NZMA permits headstones, subject to the following conditions:

    * No Qur’anic verses may be written on the headstone.
    * No photographs of the deceased are permitted on the headstone.

  • The authorised person to be present to receive the body (Hospital requirement).
  • Attach a scanned copy of the death certificate and email to janaza@nzma.kiwi.nz in order to secure a booking in the cemetery.
  • The following three completed forms are required for burials.
  • Hand a copy of the above completed forms to the NZMA Janaza service co-ordinator.
  • If you have a pre-purchased grave plot, kindly indicate it on the above form, with proof of pre-purchase certificate.
  • If it is a child burial, please provide the approximate length of the corpse so the grave to be dug accordingly.

Once the above steps are completed contact the NZMA Janaza Service on 0800 526 2292 and we will make arrangements for the funeral of your deceased. An invoice will be sent to the family from NZMA for burial costs to be paid within 21 days (Stipulated by Auckland Council in avoiding interest fees charged to NZMA).
