New Zealand Muslim Association (Established 1950)

The New Zealand Muslim Association (NZMA) was established in 1950 to serve the Muslim community throughout New Zealand. The first chairman of NZMA was the late Suilman Ismail Bhikoo, who played an instrumental role in establishing a Muslim burial ground at Waikumete Cemetery in West Auckland in 1966.

NZMA oversees several branches and Islamic centres, including Ponsonby Mosque, West Auckland Mosque (Ranui), Avondale Islamic Centre, and Birkenhead Islamic Centre.

Al-Masjid Al-Jamie -Ponsonby

The foundation stone for Ponsonby Mosque, recognised as New Zealand’s first purpose-built mosque, was laid on 30 March 1979.

Further extensions were completed in 1986, providing a dedicated prayer area for women, accommodation for the Imam, kitchen facilities, a Janazah washing room, and an additional prayer hall for Jumu’ah prayers.

In the late 20th century, the mosque was renamed Al-Masjid Al-Jamie to give it an Islamic name. Today, the mosque can accommodate approximately 700 worshippers.

Avondale Islamic Centre

Avondale Islamic Centre (AIC), located in Avondale, Auckland, serves as a place of worship for the Muslim community. The centre provides facilities for the five daily prayers and additional congregational prayers, including Taraweeh during Ramadan, for both men and women.

In addition to its religious services, the centre offers facilities for community events, educational activities, and other gatherings. It also has a multi-purpose area and a car park with space for more than 40 vehicles.

West Auckland Mosque and Islamic Centre, located in Ranui, was established in June 1995 and is recognised as the third mosque built in New Zealand.

The mosque provides five daily congregational prayers, Jumu’ah prayers, full Qur’an Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan, youth programmes, women’s programmes, daily madrassah classes, and adult Qur’an classes.

Serving the growing Muslim community of West Auckland, the mosque has facilities to accommodate up to 400 worshippers and provides approximately 30 car parks.

Birkenhead Islamic Centre

Birkenhead Islamic Centre, a branch of NZMA, was established on 4 June 2006 and began holding regular prayers in 2010. The centre serves the Muslim community across Auckland’s North Shore, including Birkenhead, Birkdale, Beach Haven, Glenfield, Wairau Park, Hillcrest, Forrest Hill, Takapuna, Bayswater, Devonport, Campbells Bay, Mairangi Bay, Browns Bay, Long Bay, Upper Harbour, and Albany.

The centre was established through the dedication and perseverance of local Muslim worshippers who recognised the need for a local place of worship. Alhamdulillah, through their continued efforts and commitment, Birkenhead Islamic Centre has grown into an important place for congregational prayers and community activities.
