SUMMARY:Creating Cohesive Societies in NZ
DESCRIPTION:Aroha is the main ingredient for Cohesive societies to thrive\, our Prime Minister\, Jacinda Ardern took the lead to creating a culture that would change the way we look\, act\, behave and feel for each other in New Zealand. This extraordinary gesture of our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gave us Aroha (Love\, Pity\, feeling concern\, Sympathy\, Compassion\, and Empathy & Integrity). She set in place firm directions for all government & local bodies\, with a clear message of what the new culture of all New Zealanders should adhear to and abide. No ifs no buts. Her quote to the nation “They are us”. \nThis is Leadership with Action. Get this\, she not only got her political party members but all members of parliament to go to Christchurch with her\, sending a clear message of unity to the nation. Her message to the President of USA\, offer sympathy and love for all Muslim Communities. \nThe Holy Quran states with verses expressing freedom of worship and strongly condemns any form of hate speech\, racism or inciting of violence. let us take the onus to educate ourselves about other people and their cultures. Let not the lack of knowledge negatively frame our thoughts and opinions about each other. In moving forward let us look beyond the stereotypes of robes and beards\, scarves and veils\, suits and ties\, dreadlocks and tattoos and let humanity bring us together. If we cannot be brothers and sister in faith then let us at least be brothers & sisters in Humanity\, (Imam Shaakir\, Avondale Islamic Centre). Jacida Ardem has also made waves to stop hate speech on Social media platforms like Facebook and Utube. \nThe main ingredients to build strong cohesive societies are:\n1. Strong\, open-minded\, fair and empathathetic leadership of the nation\n2. Genuine love and compassionate leadership of the nation\n3. Unquestionable integrity (unafraid to say what you mean-unbowing) leadership\n4. Leadership with Action (Do what you promise) for the nation \nIf these above can be achieved by the leaders of the nation\, cohesive societies will prosper. A clear example\, talking to refugees and new migrants from Muslim backgrounds now feel more safe\, with a sense of value\, recognition and feel inclusive in NZ than before the Christchurch incident. This government is putting extra funding to create societies that can contribute towards the nations GDP and the people feel proud to be able to uplift their families at the same time. A win-win outcome. \nThe Christchurch incident has opened doors\, opened minds\, brought about love for all people in NZ and this love needs to be harnessed to bring about cohesive and caring societies in the world. The Muslim leadership needs to lead by example as well\, as was done in NZ. We\, (NZMA) has already had strong connections with interfaith\, police and other agencies.  Hence\, we were able to reach out faster because of these relationships. \nAt recent International conference on Cohesive Societies in Singapore\, 19-21 June 2019. Singapore supported 10 different ethnicities by giving them its own identity to build its own churches\, temples\, mosques\, synagogues or community halls with funding\, under two conditions. Each community must learn about the other 9 religions and is required to organise two projects a year engaging and integrating with all the other ethnic communities with documentation and photo proof. This ensured these 10 religious communities worked in harmony and collectively to understand each other’s differences\, producing cohesive societies in Singapore. \nWe firmly believe having the leader of the nation that practices Aroha (Love\, Pity\, feeling concern\, Sympathy\, Compassion\, and Empathy & Integrity) and Kia Kaha (Stay Strong) is absolutely essential to building strong cohesive societies.\nAroha and Kia Kaha.\nOmar Fahmy\nAssistant Secretary\, New Zealand Muslim Association Inc.

SUMMARY:Iftar with friends
DESCRIPTION:Ramadan is a time where Muslims fast from sun rise to sun set. At the time to break the fast (Iftar) muslims gather at the local mosques with friends and family to break their fast with dates\, water and sweets followed by dinner. Avondale Islamic Centre invited friends from the local Baptist church\, the local police and neighbours. The attendees at the official iftar at AIC on the Sunday 3 June 2018\, included police officers\, representatives from church groups\, missionary members\, visitors from South Africa\, and about 40 to 50 newly converted Muslims\, among them Māori as well as those of European descent. Generally each Iftar is sponsored by an individual or a group and anyone could bring a plate to share. This act of feeding a fasting person in the month of Ramadan is considered to be a cleansing and rewarding and at the same time seeking Allah’s blessings. \nMany new faces are seen every day with the mosques buzzing with activity\, The beautiful sense of brotherhood\, sisterhood and unity made the mosques a happy environment. Some pictures at the NZMA mosques\, Avondale Islamic Centre\, Birkenhead Islamic Centre\, Ponsonby Mosque and Ranui West Auckland Mosque. \n

It was a conversation amongst people of faith about what questions to ask\, what issues to reflect on as we come to vote. \nWe had three speakers\, each from a different faith group: Jewish\, Muslim and Christian. \n \nWe had asked each speaker to tell us from their faith perspective about how to prepare to vote and what would be their top three election issues. Each speaker spoke about the importance of voting and participating in our democracy; that it was both a privilege and an obligation. \nDeb Levy spoke about her Jewish faith focusing on the importance of people\, the book (the Torah) and the land. And so her issues of focus were the security of people\, being protected from hate based crimes; education as the way to improve lives; and the land of Israel and its importance for the Jewish people. \nMohamud Mohamed reminded us that the first Muslims who came to Aotearoa arrived from China in the gold rush of 1874. They and all Muslims in NZ since follow the faith of a compassionate God who calls on us to care for others. And so for him housing\, unemployment and mental health social services were his top three issues. He spoke about how the Muslim community is trying to mentor and assist their young people as they face unemployment. \nBishop Richard Randerson spoke about the creation story from Genesis being a story of mutuality and interdependence. We are called to exercise stewardship and care of the earth and so climate change was the top of his list. Then closely followed by the high rates of incarceration in NZ (especially for Maori) and rising inequality which brings with it punishing poverty. \nIn the conversation that followed the audience made up of people from these three and other faiths asked questions and raised other issues. We discussed welcoming the stranger (immigration); thought more about poverty and homelessness\, and conscience issues. In our small population we were urged that it was not difficult to be proactive in approaching our MPs. They need to hear the varied views on such issues together with the concerns we share as people of faith. \nSpeakers to lead the discussion: \nDeb Levy \nDeb is proud to be a Jewish Kiwi. Her family escaped Nazi Europe and came as refugees to New Zealand. Deb has been involved in the Auckland Jewish Community since she was a child\, serving as an educator\, youth group leader\, programme coordinator\, and the NZ President of the Australian Union of Jewish Students. Deb holds qualifications in Law\, Sociology and English teaching and is currently completing a Certificate in Business. Deb works for LIMMUD NZ which promotes lifelong Jewish learning. \nBishop Richard Randerson \nRichard has had an extensive ministry in church and community including Dean of Auckland\, Bishop of Canberra\, Social Responsibility Commissioner for the Anglican Church and member of the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification (2000). \nMohamud Mohamed \nMohamud is currently doing a Master’s degree in Policy Studies at Auckland University of Technology. He previously worked with the United Nations and taught New Zealand Politics at AUT. He was selected to participate in the Office of Ethnic Affairs Young Leaders Programme. He is actively involved in many community groups\, as a board member at Migrant Action Trust\, Chairperson of ONKOD Somali Youth Development Inc. and is associated with UMMA Trust. \nAuckland Hebrew Congregation\, St Matthew-in-the-City\, Aljamia Masjid\, Ponsonby \nSource: https://helenjacobi.com/2017/08/04/faith-and-politics-or-the-politics-of-faith/
